What does the RSA course in NSW cover?
The course content is set by L&GNSW. You work through six online modules covering NSW liquor laws, intoxication, minors and the practical skills you need to refuse service safely. Here’s what each module covers:
- The principles of Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA)
- NSW liquor laws and compliance
- Selling and serving responsibly: Drink standards and safe practices
- Spotting the signs: Intoxication and risk awareness
- Saying no: How to refuse the sale or service of alcohol respectfully
- Harm minimisation strategies
Assessment comes in three parts:
- Knowledge questions after each module
- Practical video assessment responding to role play scenarios provided by L&GNSW, marked by an approved assessor
- A final written assessment, marked by an approved assessor
You get three attempts at each one, with support and remediation available if you use them up. Reasonable adjustments can be arranged if you need them.
How to get your NSW RSA competency card
Finishing the training is only the first step. The document that actually lets you work is issued by Liquor & Gaming NSW, not by your training provider. It is called an RSA competency card. Here’s how the process works, from enrolment to card in hand:
- Enrol and complete the online RSA course.
- Pass every assessment, including both video role plays.
- AIFS lodges your result with L&GNSW within three business days, and L&GNSW then issues your interim certificate by email.
- Take that interim certificate and your photo ID into a Service NSW centre within 90 days to apply for your RSA competency card.
Your RSA competency card is valid for five years from the date it is issued.
Who needs Responsible Service of Alcohol NSW certification?
