Food safety in Queensland is regulated by local, state and federal governments, which means that businesses are subject to multiple pieces of food safety legislation. As well as the different legislation, food businesses in Queensland must be licensed by the local councils.
The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code is the national standard regarding food safety. It covers food safety and hygiene; the layout of food premises; and the labelling, composition and advertising permitted on food.
The key principles of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, which also apply to the other states and territories in Australia, have been adopted into the Food Act 2006. This Act aims to ensure that misleading and false conduct relating to the sale of food does not happen in Queensland and to ensure that food is not only safe to eat but that consumers feel safe when dining out in Queensland.
Like the other states and territories in Australia, it is the local councils that are responsible for regulating the daily food safety requirements of Queensland food businesses. Local councils are responsible for food business licensing and must be notified of relevant information regarding Food Safety Supervisor.
